Assignment 1--Twitter

I have been feeling a little rushed through assignment one. Due to low numbers during registration I had registered three different times only to be told the classes didn't make. Luckily I was able to get in Dr. Yuen's IT860 class, but the class was already nearly one week started. Dr. Yuen fortunately was willing to work with me and I have been scrambling to get caught up.

I found the assignment on Twitter a little ironic since I have had an account for nearly a year and have never done anything with it. It was one of those things "I was going to get to eventually." Once it was assigned to me, I no longer had an excuse. I have enjoyed playing with it and posting Tweets. Something I am still trying to master is following a group and posting to a group. Some of the keyboard shortcuts that precede the Tweet--I am still trying to master. Twitter is one of those things that I wish to incorporate in my classes.

In the past I had really believed that Twitter would disappear and not catch on. However through my reading I am discovering more people are beginning to use it and continue using it for long periods of time. Last fall I had even read potential employers are now wanting applicants to be able to describe themselves in 140 characters--the the maximum amount of characters in one Tweet. I was fascinated by this and even found myself trying to do describe myself in 140 characters of less. After reading the article this was when I first began to grow more interested in incorporating this Web 2.0 application in my 100 level computer concepts course.

At a conference I attended in March the presenter had Twitter up on the projector and as an audience member had a question they would Tweet it with there phones. This reduced intimidation and didn't interrupt the speaker. As it came up he would answer the questions. I thought this would be neat to do in class since students love to use their phones.

I have enjoyed the mixxt site and hope to learn more about it in the coming months as well. It was really a neat way to set up the class and as an online teacher myself; I always enjoy seeing what other teachers do in their classes that is innovative.
